How to recycle portable batteries

Some local councils collect portable batteries as part of your kerbside collection service, but in most areas you will need to take them to a household waste recycling centre or a collection point.

What else can I do?

  • Use rechargeable household batteries wherever possible - you can even buy a solar powered recharger!

  • To reduce the number of batteries you use, consider buying electrical items which are mains operated and don't rely on using batteries;

  • Try to buy appliances that use renewable energy - a wind-up radio or torch, dynamo bicycle lights or a solar powered calculator.

Where to recycle

When it's safe and easy to do so, remove portable batteries from your electrical and electronic items such as radios and remote controls, and dispose of these at your local recycling centre or another collection point. You can often place them out to be collected from your home as part of your usual recycling collection if your local council offers this service.

  • Standard single use and rechargeable batteries;

  • Button cell batteries;

  • Batteries from household electrical appliances and tools;

  • Laptops, PCs and mobile phone batteries.
